The Open Style Collab class was an opportunity for fashion designers to work with teams of MFA design and technology students to create a garments for clients that come from an array of backgrounds and have diverse abilities.

My client was Xian Horn a wonderful teacher, blogger and motivational speaker who was born with a condition called cerebral palsy. We worked with her during the whole fall semester designing a coat that would adjust to her daily needs and special body.

Love Simple - drawing inspiration from personal caregiving relationships, this ensemble emphasizes comfort, cleanliness and femininity.

In collaboration with Riverside Rehab, during Open Style Lab summer program in teams we integrated current fashion trends, garment construction, and technologies such as soft circuits or novel material/fabrication technologies, when collaborating with people who are facing disabilities through aging. The emphasis was centered on discovering common wearable challenges that bridge the aging community with PWD to identify universal design solutions.

A jacket and skirt were designed to increase independent dressing for Michelle and assist her caregivers in dressing at wheelchair and bed level. The aesthetics were dictated by her personal style and artistic, colorful drawings.
